News Death Notice

Longtime resident of Middletown Roland (Ron) Ely passed away on February 23, 2016, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born on August 20th, 1927 in Russellville, PA. After graduating from high school Ron joined the merchant marines to earn money for college. He achieved this goal and graduated from Penn. State and later received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Ron served as a JAG officer in the U.S. Navy and retired a naval captain. Ron specialized in trust law and served as the head of the trust department for the First National Bank of Middletown. Ron's real passion with his trust background was in helping form two charitable foundations, The Middletown Community Foundation and the Miriam Knoll Foundation, both of which are existing today and helping improve the Middletown Community. Ron married Ella Martin Ely in 1953 in Georgetown, Delaware and were happily married for 62 years. Ron was a loving and committed father, and an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Ella Martin Ely of Ann Arbor; his son Micheal (Sandy) Ely of Stow, Ohio and daughters Linda (Robert) Hellner of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Andrea (Chris) Carrington of Denver CO. His sister Janet Deckman of Kennett Square His grandchildren Drew, Harrison, Spencer, Sydney, Cooper, Nicholas and Alexander, will all miss him. A local dedication service will be held in conjunction with the 50 year celebration of the Middletown campus of Miami University on Sept. 1, 2016, where a seating area will be honored with his name.
